We're an arms-length body of government responsible for growing and developing grassroots sport and getting more people active across England.
We started out as The Sports Council, an independent body under the Department of National Heritage, that was established by Royal Charter in 1972.
In 1996 an amended Royal Charter established The English Sports Council, which came into being on 1 January 1997 as The Sports Council was reorganised into UK Sport and the home nations sports councils – we were then rebranded as Sport England in 1999.

In this modern world of big multi national corporations, Baileys Horse Feeds remains quite unique in being family owned and run since its inception in 1982. There are two generations working to progress equine nutrition in the 21st century plus other couples and siblings throughout the factory and office-based teams. What’s important about so many of the people behind the Baileys brand is that they are true horse men and women, with many of them not just owning horses but actively competing, racing and breeding them.

Westgate Labs is an award-winning, family-run business based in rural Northumberland that has pioneered targeted parasite control since 1999. They revolutionized equine health care by launching the UK's first postal worm count service, transforming how horse owners manage animal wellness. Their initial advertisement in Horse & Hound sparked a industry shift away from routine, blanket chemical dosing and toward evidence-based testing. This proactive approach helps combat the growing global threat of parasite drug resistance.

Buying a horse is one of the most important decisions we make in this sport at any level — yet the process remains remarkably unregulated.
Thousands of horses are advertised online, often with limited information beyond photographs, videos and a description. Buyers travel for hours and horses are repeatedly tried by strangers, relying on guesswork to find ‘the one’. Try a Horse is designed to change that.
