About the BHF
The British Horse Foundation

The British Horse Foundation aims to improve equine breeding and young horse development using research-led, evidence-based, high-welfare and sustainable approaches.
As our understanding progresses there are opportunities to improve practices across the equine industry by sharing this knowledge – we share this freely via our Knowledge Hub, making current research and best-practice accessible to our British breeders and young horse producers.
Our mission
Advancing equine breeding, lifelong wellbeing and performance through research, education and collaboration
We promote “Better Beginnings” for horses by collaborating with expert industry, academic and performance specialists to capture the latest research at our biennial conferences and to share best-practice advice. We use this content to produce open-access dissemination materials as webinars, podcasts and social media reels to share across the industry.

The early years are crucial, making it essential that best practices are developed and adopted to provide lifelong sustainable wellbeing for all horses.

If breeding decisions, management and initial training are done with best practice in mind it will lead to fewer performance limiting soundness or temperament issues.
Our History
The British Horse Foundation was established as a charity in 1991 under the Chairmanship of triple Olympic gold medal winner Richard Meade OBE.
